Full dark ruby. Liqueur-like aromas of black raspberry, black cherry, violet and bitter chocolate; my sample showed distinctly port-like evidence of surmaturite Fat, full and primary, with dark berry, licorice, mineral and mint flavors. Began rather monolithic but showed good acidity and definition as it opened in the glass. Excellent density and sweetness of fruit. Finishes with big but even tannins. Very promising, intensely flavored Pomerol with personality.

A fabled wine from the Christian and Jean-Pierre Moueix portfolio, this classically vinified wine always performs better after its elevage and bottling. The 2000 has added weight as well as texture, and is significantly better this year than it was last. A saturated ruby color is followed by aromas of black cherries, caramel, truffles, and sweet earth. Textured and medium to full-bodied, with moderately high tannin (typical of Pomerol's finest 2000s), it will require patience. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2019.

In 2000, this was still the property of Lily Lacoste, who also owned Pétrus. Latour à Pomerol was sold in 2001 to a Catholic charity. The management, then and now, is with the Moueix family who make the most of the fabulous vineyard. The 2000 is a hugely opulent, velvet textured wine, but it retains hints of the elegance that is the hallmark of this property.

I like the bright, violet character in this wine. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins and a fruity finish. Slightly one-dimensional, but well done. Should develop very well. Score range: 89-91
